SUNSPOTS & MOLES

A melanocytic naevus, or mole, is a common benign skin lesion due to a local proliferation of pigment cells (melanocytes). A brown or black melanocytic naevus contains the pigment melanin, so may also be called a pigmented naevus.

Sunspots or “solar lentigos” are harmless patches of darkened skin, resulting from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which causes local proliferation of melanocytes and accumulation of melanin within skin cells called keratinocytes.

Most moles and sunpots are benign. However, guideline recommendations advise periodically reviewing moles and seeking medical attention in case of concerns as per ABCDE criteria:

  • A - Asymmetry

  • B - Borderline irregularity

  • C - Colour heterogeneity

  • D - Diameter

  • E - Evolution in size, shape or colour
